Your well-considered leader (9 March), despite its reference to Bishop Rawcliffe's action as an "admission" of homosexuality, adds to the sensible way in which this debate index html has been revived. Of the two developments this week, Bishop Rawcliffe's "coming out" is by far the most positive and encouraging. It html edm lecture is a major role of the medical profession to convince edm smokers that not smoking is the best thing they can do to improve their lecture health, which will lead to improved happiness and well-being.No Smoking Day provides a starting html point for smokers to quit and improve their health immeasurably Health campaigns edm are working Smoking is on the decline. Smokers have to be educated over a long period to quit the habit. Nearly 80 per cent edm of smokers want index html to stop, but don't have the lecture willpower or motivation. But, index as Mr Appleyard says, the heavy-handed approach does not lecture work. Tests will soon be index edm lecture available to detect and measure cigarette smoking, and will be carried out by doctors, nurses index and insurance agents. How do we convince a html smoker whose grandfather is 92 and smokes like a chimney of the harm of smoking? I just say "tell that to the widow of the man who died of a heart attack at 35, as a direct result of smoking".Secret smoking is a problem, but we have addressed this problem.
The health risks of passive smoking are far from proven, but why should I suffer irritation to eyes and throat, and stink of smoke because of a few selfish individuals? Anecdotal evidence is the bane of all anti-smoking professionals. And because of the minority, the majority have to suffer the consequences. From Dr Graham F Cope Sir: Smoking is a minority activity. Even if Brian Appleyard's assumptions are right ("The anti-smoking fundamentalists", 8 March) , that many people are casual smokers, it still means 50 per cent of people never smoke, and wish to avoid smokey atmospheres. Maybe we should spend more on buildings and less on the current generation of undergraduates; or more on those who are really in need, and less on the rest. But to enter into that debate, it is necessary to find out the relevant facts and face the hard choices, two things that Mr Faith is unwilling to do.Yours faithfully,J R LUCASMerton College,Oxford9 March. But it does take more time to listen and comment on essays individually than to give lectures in large lecture halls, and there is a substantial body of testimony that it is more educative.
Does Mr Faith really mean to say that the state should not buy this form of education for any state-assisted students, and reserve education at Oxford and Cambridge for the children of foreigners and the rather rich?Mr Faith goes on to complain that Oxford and Cambridge colleges "have perfected a system of non-disclos- ure that would do credit to the Cayman Islands". Few companies in the Cayman Islands publish their accounts each year in the form laid down by the 1923 Act of Parliament.Mr Faith can go to the British Library and scrutinise our accounts for himself. It is true that the accounts are concerned mostly with actual income and expenditure, rather than capital assets, but there is a reason for this: many of the assets are in land and buildings, and there is no way of putting an accurate value on these except when they are being sold.My college's priorities can be gauged from our attitude towards the Bodleian Library. We make an annual grant, recently increased, towards the cost of buying foreign books.
